Kate Moss – More than just a Supermodel

Posted on 06 June 2011   Kate Moss, Trendsetters

Kate had a very different image compared to the super models of that era such as, Elle McPherson and Naomi Campbell. From then on Moss became the face of many campaigns including Rimmel, Calvin Klein and Chanel.

By November 1999 she was labelled as a “Modern Muse” when she appeared on the Millennium cover of American Vogue. Other endeavours also included appearing in music videos and providing vocals for the likes of Oasis and Elton John. In 1999 Moss was cast in the British comedy Blackadder: Back & Forth playing Maid Marian and as a fictional Queen of England. The director and writer – Richard Curtis said that they wanted “the best looking woman in England” to play the role.

Moss’s career continued to climb until a wrong turn led to her publicised drug abuse and her controversial private life began to be scrutinized by the media and the public. Moss was able to pull back from the allegations of her bad habits and made a comeback by taking on 18 top modelling contracts for the Autumn/Winter 2006 season including Agent Provocateur and Burberry. In November of that same year Moss was named ‘Model of the Year’ at the British Fashion Awards. The next year she went on to collaborate with Katy England to design an exclusive collection consisting of 50 pieces for high street store Topshop. Her collaborating prospects also branched into beauty products and Moss was able to lend her name in association with Coty for a fragrance and body lotion range in 2007 and since then has released 4 fragrances. In March of that same year Moss was given the NME award for ‘Sexiest Woman’. Brands recognised that Kate Moss was a name that would be around for many years to come and she continued with endorsements and collaborations alongside modelling. By 2010 she was named as the face of luxury French brand Longchamp and since this launch she has been designing her own handbag collection for the brand.

Kate Moss has been known as an international fashion icon and has managed to obtain over 30 Vogue covers throughout her time in the industry. After such a successful career Moss went on to have her daughter Lila Grace with editor of Dazed and Confused magazine Jefferson Hack, and she is also Godmother to 3 children – two sons of The Clash member Paul Simonon and to the daughter of Sadie Frost and Jude Law. Within her controversial personal life Moss has had many relationships which have been publicised but not for the right reasons. The one romantic link which was especially scrutinised was with former Libertines member Pete Doherty. The pair’s party lifestyle was put under the microscope and regular updates were publicised in the media. After such a heavily monitored relationship scandal with Doherty, Moss is now happily engaged to Jamie Hince and is set to be married this year. Even through all the controversy surrounding the Kate Moss name, the model continues to hold her cult following and the approval of industry greats.
